Russia ready for new negotiations for a way out of Ukrainian crisis
(VOVWORLD) - Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council, on Saturday said that Moscow is willing to discuss options for a way out of the Ukrainian crisis, following the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
He said that Russia is ready to show flexibility in negotiations on Ukraine, but only in accordance with the Russian Constitution and in accordance with existing realities.
In related news, Hungary and Slovakia on Saturday called on the European Union (EU) to begin negotiations with Russia about the conflict in Ukraine. In a letter to European Council President Antonio Costa dated Saturday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in the current context, reaching a unified EU stance on the Ukraine issue cannot be achieved through exchanging information or drafting agreements. Instead, the EU should engage in direct dialogue with Russia on a ceasefire and long-term peace in Ukraine. Prime Minister Orban also warned that he would veto any agreement regarding the Ukraine conflict at the European Summit on Sunday in London.
In addition to Hungary, Slovakia has also taken a firm stance on the issue of providing assistance to Ukraine. In a statement following the debate between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that Slovakia would refuse to provide financial or military support to Ukraine.
European Union leaders will meet for an extraordinary summit next Thursday to discuss additional support for Ukraine, European security guarantees and how to pay for European defense needs.
